So you took the leap to be an entrepreneur, Congratulations! At the heart of owning your own business is a desire for freedom, to follow your heart and a passion for doing something that is a match for your skills, talents and gifts.

It takes a lot of drive, courage, commitment and belief in yourself to step out of mainstream and into self employment. And yes, it takes long hard hours that are exchanged for personal reward and freedom to do it “your way”. Give yourself a big pat on the back. Follow these 5 secrets for greater success:

1) Find yourself a support network of other self employed business owners. You’ll find them at the Chamber of Commerce, Networking groups, membership associations. You’ll meet them in coffee shops, professional development seminars, and expos. The world is buzzing with “our kind of people” who relate to your passion, drive, challenges and commitment.

2) The most successful business owners have a “fan club” whether it is family, partner, spouse or children who value your commitment to your business. Who is in your camp?

3) Don’t expect others to understand. Unless they have been in your shoes, it is hard for the person employed by someone else to have an understanding of your challenges. Heck, they may even be secretly jealous and some may even want you to fail. Be careful of what and with whom you choose to share your ups and downs. You need allies and if they can’t be one, keep the “shop talk” to a minimum.

4) Burnout is very real in the self employment world. Taking care of yourself is critical, and hard to do when you are playing many roles and meeting deadlines. Remember, you can’t be your best and offer your best service to your customers unless you are in a state of health with focus and clarity. The only way to be at the top of your game is to manage your time well, de-stress, and be balanced in body, mind and spirit.

5) Be clear in your personal mission and create your daily goals around it. Stephen Covey, Author of “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” reminds us to “begin with the end in mind”. Some days you will get tired, you will feel off track, but bring yourself back to the reason you are in business and the gifts you are sharing with the world will help you keep things in perspective, and your consistent daily efforts will reap rewards when you keep the big picture in mind.
