Choosing the right keywords to target in your SEO efforts is probably the biggest and most important task your must take before optimizing your pages. It can be a license to print money if done correctly.
You need to focus on the right keywords and stop wasting time on keywords that don’t convert. There is no point optimizing a page or website for a keyword that doesn’t result in a required action, whether that action is someone giving you their email address or maybe someone purchasing your product. In the same breath there is no point getting tons of traffic for keywords that don’t really relate to your niche. Clear and careful thought should be given to your keyword selection.

• Search engines don’t rank websites they rank pages. Think of each page as a website in itself. Therefore you should ideally optimize only one or two keyword phrases on each page. This can be quite a task if you have a huge established website. But the rewards can be great.

• Studies show that short search phrases, 1 to 2 words, are generally people who are looking for information, whereas 3 or 4 word search phrases are more likely people who want something specific and tend to be buyers.

• 1 or 2 phrase keywords are usually very competitive and quite difficult to target. What you want to do is target high traffic, low competition keyword phrase and these tend to be the longer more specific phrases.

• Uncover keywords that are specific. Forget even trying to optimize a page for a single phrase keyword. Its way to general.
