All businesses have to advertise. Without potential customers who are in search of your product or service being constantly reminded that you are the best, nearest, cheapest, deliver the best service, high quality and so then they may well go to another supplier. It is very unusual for a business to have totally cornered the market, unless they are a gold mine or a oil producer for example, and thus they are always going to be under pressure to keep themselves in front of the customer.

Consequently it is almost commonsense to have entries in the Business listing sections of local media. Many individuals and companies like to keep their Business local which makes sense for deliveries, returns, warranties and so on. It also makes sense for the business as they can learn how best to service their customers.

Initially the internet was like that. Get a good website going and a search engine would index you and there you were. You had system that would always produce some visitors.

But a few things happened to change all this:
Firstly the internet rolled out and with it Broadband and high speeds so instead of being just for the esoteric and a few it became normal for every one to have internet access. In the US it is almost impossible to do business without it. Far more homes have broadband access than don't.
The Search engines became and are becoming more and more sophisticated. They do not however publish the methods they use to allocate a page ranking to a URL. This means that one has to rely on the experience of the companies who have been successful at getting good page rankings.
And of course nowadays there are far more websites. In fact over 30,000 new names are registered on a daily basis. Not all of these make it to a website status, many are in foreign languages and most will not be competing in the niche you trade in. Nevertheless competition is certainly there.

Experience has taught that search engines page rankings are dynamic and are constantly changing. In each niche a URL which is static will slowly and steadily slip down the rankings while active websites which are currently being updated will rise. A further very important point is the links. Directory entries in business listing pages carry high scoring relevant links. So getting as much of your business local makes sense and using the internet wisely by listing in as many directories as possible also makes sense.

It is important that a sense of perspective is kept in this. The market is a huge and a dynamic place. In addition there is no 1 right answer to keep one's page ranking high. One has to do many things the whole time and using business listing in local directories is one very useful method of keeping the page rankings high and retaining those who like to keep their business local. Listing in directories is a very white hat way of increasing your relevant links.
